Magma is hot, melted rock under the ground. It has gas stuck inside it, kind of like a shaken-up soda can. When magma moves up near the top, there's less stuff pushing down on it, so the gas wants to get out. If the magma is thick, the gas can't leak out slow — it blasts out fast. That fast blast is what makes a volcano explode instead of just flowing out.

Deep underground, hot melted rock called magma has gas trapped inside it — like a shaken soda bottle. As the magma moves up, there's less weight pushing down on it, so the gas starts to escape. If the magma is thick, the gas can't get out slowly; it bursts out fast. That's why some volcanoes explode instead of just leaking lava.

When magma gets close to the surface, the pressure pushing down on it gets weaker, which lets the gas trapped inside it start to bubble out. If the magma is thick and sticky, the gas can't escape smoothly — it builds up fast. That fast buildup is what makes a volcano explode instead of just oozing lava.

As magma rises toward the surface, the pressure holding it down drops, so the gases dissolved inside it start separating out. If the magma is too thick to let that gas escape smoothly, the gas expands faster than the pressure can be released — and the eruption explodes instead of just flowing out.

Because magma near the surface exsolves dissolved volatiles as confining pressure drops, the resulting gas expansion can outpace the melt's viscosity-limited ability to relieve that pressure, producing an explosive rather than effusive eruption.
